Concerts in Toronto: Budweiser Stage, History, Massey Hall and the Danforth by black car

Toronto's concert calendar runs from the Budweiser Stage's summer amphitheatre on the lake to Massey Hall's restored 1894 room to the arenas' stadium tours — a dozen venues, each with its own door, its own post-show crush and its own surge at the last chord. Here is the concert night from the driver's seat, venue by venue.

Concert night, in one paragraph

Toronto's concert venues each have a drop and a post-show pickup a chauffeur knows: Budweiser Stage (Ontario Place, 16,000, May to September — the Lake Shore at Remembrance Drive drop before the closure, the shuttle to the Exhibition GO, and the pickup at Lake Shore and Newfoundland Road or King and Strachan after), History (1663 Queen East, 2,500 — the Queen Street curb off-peak and the Beaches and Leslieville guide's side streets), Massey Hall (178 Victoria, 2,700 — the Victoria Street curb and the Shuter side), Roy Thomson Hall (60 Simcoe, 2,600 — the Simcoe lay-by), the Danforth Music Hall (147 Danforth, 1,500 — the Danforth's curb off-peak), the Phoenix (410 Sherbourne), the Opera House (735 Queen East), Rebel (11 Polson Street, the waterfront — the Polson lot and the Cherry Street approach), the Coca-Cola Coliseum (Exhibition Place), and the arena and stadium shows at Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Centre. The group's Sprinter on the hourly, the encore's timing (the pickup is the scheduled end plus twenty), the 905's families bound for the amphitheatre, and the surge the apps charge at the last chord are the night's arithmetic.

Toronto's concert map is a dozen rooms from 400 seats to 50,000 — the summer amphitheatre on the lake, the restored Victorian hall on Victoria Street, the converted movie palaces on the Danforth and Queen East, the waterfront club at the Port Lands, the arena and the stadium — and each room's night has the same shape: a drop before the doors, a wait or a return, a pickup at a corner the crowd's exit and the venue's closures allow, and a surge the apps charge at the last chord that a black car booked in the afternoon does not. A chauffeur who works the concert calendar knows each venue's door, its post-show crush and the corner that clears first. This guide covers the Budweiser Stage in full, then each of the other venues, the summer calendar, the encore's timing, the group's vehicle, the dinner-and-show evening, the 905's families, the arena and stadium shows, the after-parties, and a worked amphitheatre night.

Budweiser Stage: the amphitheatre

The Budweiser Stage at Ontario Place — 16,000 (9,000 seated, 7,000 on the lawn), May to September, the summer's touring acts three or four nights a week — sits on the lake south of Lake Shore Boulevard west of Strachan, reached by the Ontario Place bridge from Lake Shore at Remembrance Drive; on a concert night the police close Lake Shore's Ontario Place stretch to through traffic from an hour before doors to an hour after the show, run the venue's shuttle to the Exhibition GO station, and manage the Remembrance Drive crossing. The drop is at Lake Shore and Remembrance Drive before the closure (by 6:30 for a 7 p.m. doors) or at King and Strachan after it (a fifteen-minute walk south through Exhibition Place and over the bridge); the pickup after the show is at Lake Shore and Newfoundland Road (the closure's west end, a ten-minute walk), King and Strachan (fifteen), or Dufferin and Springhurst (the BMO Field article's west gate, fifteen) — agreed before, the chauffeur waiting from the scheduled end, and the Liberty Village guide's doors for the exit. A summer's Saturday show shares the grounds with the CNE (the CNE article) or a TFC match and the closures compound.

History

History (1663 Queen Street East, at Coxwell — the 2,500-capacity room Drake and Live Nation opened in 2021 in the Beaches' western blocks) has its door on Queen East with the 501 streetcar in mixed traffic — a drop on Queen's curb off-peak away from the stops, and the pickup on Coxwell north of Queen or on the side streets (Hannaford, Woodfield) that the Beaches and Leslieville guide covers; the room's shows end at 11 and the Queen Street crowd disperses in fifteen minutes, which makes History the city's easiest large-room pickup.

Massey Hall

Massey Hall (178 Victoria Street, at Shuter — the 1894 hall restored and reopened in 2021, 2,700 seats, the Allied Music Centre's new rooms beside it) has its main doors on Victoria with the Shuter Street side entrance; the drop is Victoria's curb south of Shuter (one-way southbound) and the pickup the same, or Yonge at Shuter for a passenger who walks through the Eaton Centre's block — the Financial District hotels guide's Yonge rules apply south of Queen and the Eaton Centre's Trinity Way lay-by is the calm alternative two blocks west. The hall's shows end at 10:30 and Victoria's crowd is gone by 10:45.

Roy Thomson Hall, the Danforth, the Phoenix, the Opera House

Roy Thomson Hall (60 Simcoe — the Toronto Symphony's home and the touring concerts' room, 2,600): the TIFF guide's Simcoe lay-by south of King, shared with the Ritz on a concert night, and the theatre district article's timing. The Danforth Music Hall (147 Danforth, at Broadview — the 1919 movie palace, 1,500): the Danforth's curb off-peak (no streetcar), the pickup on the Danforth east of Broadview or on Hampton behind; the Beaches and Leslieville guide's Danforth. The Phoenix Concert Theatre (410 Sherbourne, at Carlton — 1,350): Sherbourne's curb, the Pride article's Sherbourne corners. The Opera House (735 Queen East, at Broadview — the 1909 vaudeville house, 850): Queen East's curb off-peak and Broadview's. Each ends at 11 and clears in ten minutes.

Rebel and the waterfront clubs

Rebel (11 Polson Street, in the Port Lands — the 2,500-capacity club and its Cabana pool club beside it) is reached via Cherry Street south from Lake Shore and Polson east, with a lot and a drop-off loop at the door and a Cherry Street that carries the club's whole crowd out at 3 a.m. on a Saturday; the pickup is the loop (early) or Cherry and Commissioners (late, when the loop is a scrum), and the Distillery District guide covers the Cherry Street bridge's construction and the Harbourfront guide the waterfront's other clubs. The Nuit Blanche and late-night article covers the overnight roster that Rebel's 3 a.m. needs.

The summer calendar

The Budweiser Stage's season runs Tuesday to Sunday from Victoria Day to Labour Day — the touring acts' Toronto dates, the festivals' weekends (the country and the hip-hop weekends, the two-night stands), the Caribbean Carnival's and the Honda Indy's weekends when the grounds' closures compound — and the venue's calendar sets the fleet's summer evenings; a Saturday amphitheatre car is booked by the Wednesday and a festival weekend's by the week before, the how early to book article's peak logic applied to a summer night.

The encore's timing

A concert's scheduled end is the headliner's set plus the encore, and the encore is the pickup's uncertainty: a chauffeur books the pickup at the scheduled end plus twenty, waits at the corner from the scheduled end, and moves on the passenger's text ("last song") — the flight delays article's wait policy covers an encore as it covers a late flight, and the what is included in a fare article's allowance the twenty minutes. A passenger who leaves before the encore beats the crowd to the corner; one who stays walks through it.

The group's vehicle

A birthday's ten to the amphitheatre, a bachelorette's twelve to History, a company's team to Massey Hall — a Sprinter on the hourly with the drop at the venue's door and the pickup at the corner a full Sprinter fits (King and Strachan for the amphitheatre, Coxwell for History, Yonge at Shuter for Massey), or a stretch limousine for the birthday that wants the arrival (the birthday limo article and the stag and bachelorette article); the group transfers article covers the vehicle's capacity for a group with the lawn's blankets and coolers.

The dinner-and-show evening

A concert's evening is the date night article's three acts — dinner at 5:30 (the fine dining article's rooms for Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall; the Beaches and Leslieville guide's Queen East rooms for History and the Opera House; Liberty Village's for the amphitheatre), the show at 8, a bar after — on the hourly, and the hourly vs point-to-point article says the hourly wins by the second stop.

The 905's families and the amphitheatre

The Budweiser Stage's summer crowd is half the 905 — families from Oakville, Mississauga, Markham and Whitby for the country shows and the pop tours, in SUVs and Sprinters on the QEW, the 401 and the DVP to the Gardiner's Jameson or Dufferin exits — and the cities pages cover each city's approach, the 407 article the toll road from the north, and the child seats article the SUV for a family's first concert; a Whitby family's 11:30 p.m. drive home on the 401 is the reason the family booked the car.

The arena and stadium shows

Scotiabank Arena's 80-odd concerts a year and Rogers Centre's stadium tours are the Scotiabank Arena guide's and the Rogers Centre guide's maps — the same closures, the same corners, a crowd that leaves in one wave after the encore rather than a game's trickle — and the Coca-Cola Coliseum's concerts at Exhibition Place use the Dufferin Gate; a stadium show's 50,000 at 11:15 on a Saturday is the year's largest single pickup demand and the black car vs Uber Black article's surge is the reason a stadium car is booked in the afternoon.

The after-parties

The touring acts' after-parties (the King West clubs, the Yorkville hotels' bars, Rebel's and the waterfront's), the fans' (the Entertainment District guide's bars), and the artists' own transport (the film and TV production article's pattern — the tour's manager, the hotel's discreet door, the privacy and discretion article's standard) run until 3, and the Nuit Blanche and late-night article covers the overnight roster.

A worked amphitheatre night

A Whitby family of four, a Saturday in July, a 7:30 show. 5:00 p.m.: the Whitby home to Lake Shore and Remembrance Drive via the 401, the DVP and the Gardiner's Lake Shore exit at Strachan — dropped at 6:20, before the closure, with the lawn blankets; a Liberty Village dinner the chauffeur suggested was skipped for the lawn's picnic. 6:20–10:50: the SUV on King and Strachan's west curb from 10:30. 10:48: the text — "encore, leaving after." 11:05: the family at King and Strachan, fifteen minutes' walk through the grounds and over the bridge. 11:10: the 401 east; Whitby by midnight, two children asleep. One booking, one closure, no surge on Lake Shore.

Booking a concert car

The engine takes the venue's name with the corner and the show's end in the notes; the hourly chauffeur page books the dinner-and-show evening or the group's Sprinter; the stretch limo page the birthday's arrival. Book a Saturday amphitheatre car by the Wednesday.

The smaller rooms and the club shows

The Horseshoe Tavern and the Rivoli on Queen West (the Queen curb off-peak), Lee's Palace on Bloor at Bathurst, the Great Hall on Queen West, the El Mocambo on Spadina, the Velvet Underground and the Garrison on Dundas West, the Rex's jazz on Queen, Koerner Hall's classical and world music at the Royal Conservatory on Bloor (the University of Toronto article's Bloor curb west of Avenue Road) — the city's 300-to-1,000-seat rooms have curbs a car uses off-peak and side streets for the pickup, and a club show's 1 a.m. end is the Nuit Blanche and late-night article's roster. The Bloor West and High Park guide covers the west end's rooms and the Beaches and Leslieville guide the east's.

FAQ

Questions we are asked

Where is the pickup after a Budweiser Stage show?

Lake Shore and Newfoundland Road (the closure's west end, ten minutes' walk), King and Strachan (fifteen, through Exhibition Place and over the bridge) or Dufferin and Springhurst — agreed before, with the chauffeur waiting from the scheduled end; Lake Shore's Ontario Place stretch is closed for an hour after the show.

How do you time the pickup for an encore?

The scheduled end plus twenty minutes, with the chauffeur at the corner from the scheduled end and moving on your text — 'last song' — and the fare's wait allowance covering the encore.

Which venue is the easiest pickup?

History on Queen East — the 2,500-person crowd disperses onto Queen and Coxwell in fifteen minutes; Massey Hall's Victoria Street clears in the same time. The amphitheatre and the arena are the hardest.

What vehicle for a group of ten to a concert?

A Sprinter on the hourly, with the pickup at a corner a full Sprinter fits — King and Strachan for the amphitheatre, Coxwell for History, Yonge at Shuter for Massey Hall; a stretch limousine for a birthday that wants the arrival.

We're coming from Whitby — is the car worth it?

For a family's evening ending at 11 on the 401, yes — the drop at Lake Shore before the closure, the pickup at King and Strachan, and a chauffeur for the drive home while the children sleep; the 905's families are half the amphitheatre's summer crowd.
