Honda Indy Toronto: getting to Exhibition Place when the streets are the track

For one weekend in July, Exhibition Place is a racetrack — IndyCars at 280 km/h along Lake Shore Boulevard, the grounds closed for two weeks of build and teardown, and a hundred thousand people in the grandstands. A limo works the race from the gates and the hospitality suites' credentials. Here is race weekend from the driver's seat.

The Honda Indy, in one paragraph

The Honda Indy Toronto — the NTT IndyCar Series' street race on a 2.8-kilometre temporary circuit through Exhibition Place's roads and along Lake Shore Boulevard between Strachan and British Columbia Road, over a mid-July weekend (Friday practice with free admission, Saturday qualifying and support races, Sunday's race at about 1:30 p.m.) — closes Lake Shore's Exhibition stretch and the grounds' roads for the circuit from the week before (the build) to the week after (the teardown), with Strachan south of King closed on the race days and the Gardiner's Lake Shore exit at Strachan shut. A limo drops and collects at the gates' corners — King and Strachan for the east gates (the Princes' Gates' grandstands), Dufferin and Springhurst for the west gates — and serves the paddock and hospitality suites by credential (the sponsors' guests by Sprinter to the credentialed drop inside the grounds), the Liberty Village and Parkdale residents' fortnight of noise and closures (the Liberty Village guide), and the weekend's overlap with the summer's other events on the same grounds.

The Honda Indy has run through Exhibition Place since 1986 — a street circuit built on the grounds' roads and Lake Shore Boulevard every July, with grandstands along the lake, a paddock in the Enercare Centre's lots, and hospitality suites above the pit lane — and its weekend is the summer's most contained closure: the circuit's roads are the fair's roads and the parade's road, closed for two weeks rather than a day, with the race's hundred thousand spectators arriving through the same gates the CNE uses. A limo serves the race from the corners outside the closure and, for the sponsors' and the teams' guests, from the credentialed drops inside it. This guide covers the circuit and its closures, the weekend's schedule, the gates and the grandstands, the paddock and the hospitality suites, the sponsors' guests, the Friday's free day, the residents' fortnight, the noise and the sessions' timing, the pickup corners, the summer's overlap, the airports and the 905, and a worked race Sunday.

The circuit and its closures

The circuit runs from the start-finish straight on Princes' Boulevard through Exhibition Place's roads — the turns around the Enercare Centre and the Coliseum, the Ontario Place stretch — out onto Lake Shore Boulevard westbound from Strachan toward British Columbia Road and back; the concrete walls and the fencing go up over the ten days before the race and come down over the five after, and Lake Shore's Exhibition stretch and the grounds' roads are closed for the whole fortnight, with Strachan south of King, the Princes' Gates' crossing and the Gardiner's Lake Shore exit at Strachan closed on the three race days. Dufferin, Springhurst, King and Liberty Village's streets stay open, and the BMO Field article covers the grounds' ordinary match-day closures that the race's fortnight sits over.

The weekend's schedule

Friday: practice sessions from morning to afternoon, the support series' practice, free admission (the "Fan Friday" the race has run for years); Saturday: IndyCar qualifying at midday, the support series' races, the paddock open; Sunday: the support races in the morning, the IndyCar race at about 1:30 p.m. (85 laps, ninety minutes to two hours), the podium, and the exit from 3:30. The race's site has the year's schedule and the sessions' times decide the drops — a spectator for the Sunday race is dropped by 11 for the pre-race and collected after 4.

The gates and the grandstands

The race's gates are the CNE's: the Princes' Gates on Strachan (the east — the start-finish grandstands, the pit-lane suites' entrance, the Fan Zone) and the Dufferin Gate (the west — the Lake Shore turns' grandstands, the general-admission lawns); the grandstands run along Princes' Boulevard and Lake Shore's north side, with the general-admission areas on the grounds' lawns and the Ontario Place stretch. A drop for the Princes' Gates is at King and Strachan (Strachan is closed south of King on race days — a ten-minute walk through the gate); for the Dufferin Gate, at Dufferin and Springhurst (five minutes); the Exhibition GO station serves the transit crowd and a chauffeur says so for a group going to Union.

The paddock and the hospitality suites

The paddock — the teams' garages, the transporters, the drivers' motorhomes — sits in the Enercare Centre's lots and the pit lane along Princes' Boulevard, and the hospitality suites (the sponsors', the teams', the race's own) sit above the pit lane and in the Enercare Centre's rooms with a view of the start-finish; both are credentialed, and a credentialed vehicle enters the grounds by the race's designated route (from Dufferin via the grounds' north roads, or from Strachan north of the closure by the race's marshals) to the drop the credential names. A sponsor's transport manager sends dispatch the credentials and the drop a week ahead, and the conference transportation article's coordinator pattern runs the weekend.

The sponsors' guests

A sponsor's hospitality programme — forty guests from a downtown hotel to the suite for the Sunday, or a dealer group's hundred over the three days — is Sprinters on the hourly from the hotel (the Financial District hotels guide's or the Toronto luxury hotels guide's doors) to the credentialed drop, staged inside the grounds or on Dufferin between runs, and the reverse after the podium, with the corporate account billing article's coding and the group transfers article's vehicle; a team's or a driver's own movements — the hotel to the paddock at 6 a.m., the airport on the Sunday night — are the roadshow article's precision with a paddock pass in the front seat.

The Friday's free day

Fan Friday's free admission brings the grounds' largest weekday crowd and the families — the practice sessions, the paddock walk, the Fan Zone's displays — and a family's Friday is the CNE article's family day with a racetrack: the Dufferin Gate at 11, the SUV with the child seats and the ear protection in the trunk (the cars are loud — below), and the Springhurst curb at 4.

The residents' fortnight

Liberty Village, Parkdale, Fort York and Humber Bay's residents live with the circuit's build, the three days' noise and the fortnight's closures every July, and the Liberty Village guide's CNE plan applies — Dufferin and Atlantic as the doors, the Jameson and Dufferin ramps as the airport routes, the east half avoided on race days — with a resident's profile carrying the routing; the race's shuttle buses and the GO station's crowds fill the neighbourhood's west streets on the Sunday.

The noise and the sessions' timing

An IndyCar at full throttle is 130 decibels at the fence, the sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the three days, and a spectator (and a Liberty Village resident) wants ear protection; the sessions' timing sets the drops (before the session the spectator wants) and the pickups (after the day's last session, or after the race's podium on the Sunday, when the crowd leaves in one wave), and the pickup corners are the CNE's and the Carnival's named-corner logic: agreed before, the chauffeur waiting from the hour, a ten-minute walk to a car that is where it said.

The pickup corners

King and Strachan (the east gates, ten minutes), Dufferin and Springhurst (the west, five), King and Dufferin (the Liberty Village edge, ten from either gate), Queen and Dufferin (fifteen, clear of the crowd), and — for a credentialed vehicle — the drop the credential names inside the grounds; the Gardiner's Dufferin ramp is the exit west and King Street the exit east (west of Bathurst, no corridor rules — the Entertainment District guide covers the district a Sunday-night group goes on to).

The summer's overlap

The race's mid-July weekend sits between the Caribbean Carnival's Civic Holiday weekend and the CNE's August opening on the same grounds, with a Toronto FC home date often the week before or after, the Harbourfront's summer festivals across the harbour, and the Budweiser Stage's concerts at Ontario Place (inside the circuit's fence — the Stage's July concerts are scheduled around the race); a chauffeur's July calendar at Exhibition Place is the summer's busiest and the long weekends article covers the holiday traffic the race sometimes shares.

The airports and the 905

The race's teams, drivers, sponsors and international fans arrive at Pearson through the week — the Pearson page's meet and greet for a driver, the private aviation page's FBO for a team owner — and the 905's dealer groups and fans come in on the QEW and the 401 to the Dufferin ramp or King; the Sunday-night departures to Pearson from the hotels are the how early to book article's peak, booked with the weekend.

A worked race Sunday

A dealer group's twenty guests at the Ritz-Carlton. 10:30 a.m.: two Sprinters from the Ritz's Simcoe lay-by to the credentialed hospitality drop inside the grounds via the Gardiner's Jameson exit, Dufferin and the race's north entrance; the credentials checked by the marshals; the guests in the suite by 11:15. 11:15–3:45: the Sprinters staged on Dufferin north of Springhurst. 3:30: the transport manager's text — "podium done, coming out at 3:50." 3:50: the Sprinters at the drop; the guests aboard; the north entrance's exit to Dufferin, the Gardiner's Dufferin ramp, the Ritz by 4:30. 7:30: the guests' dinner at Canoe — a walk. 9:30 p.m.: four of the guests to Terminal 1 for the late flights. Two Sprinters, one credential each, one afternoon staged on Dufferin, and a dealer group that booked next year's suite transport the following week.

Booking race weekend

The corporate car service page opens a sponsor's or a team's account; the credentials and the drop to dispatch a week ahead do the rest; the engine takes the gate's corner and the hour for a spectator's transfer; the hourly chauffeur page the Sprinter for a group's day.

The race's history on the grounds

The race began in 1986 as the Molson Indy on the same Exhibition Place streets, ran as the Grand Prix of Toronto through the Champ Car years, and has been the Honda Indy since 2009; the circuit's layout has changed at the margins — the Lake Shore stretch's length, the turns around the Enercare Centre — but the gates, the grandstands' positions and the fortnight's closures have been the west end's July fixture for four decades, and the chauffeurs who work it know the marshals by name. The Liberty Village guide covers the neighbourhood that grew up beside the circuit.

Booking notes for race weekend

"Honda Indy Sunday, two Sprinters from the Ritz's Simcoe lay-by 10:30 a.m. to the hospitality drop (credentials attached), twenty guests; staged on Dufferin; return after the podium about 3:50" — the day, the vehicles, the door, the credential, the party and the return's trigger; for a spectator, "Dufferin and Springhurst, drop 11, pickup same corner about 4"; the how to book online article shows the fields.

The teardown week and the summer after

The week after the race, the circuit's walls come down, Lake Shore reopens lane by lane, and the grounds prepare for the CNE's build three weeks later; a Liberty Village resident's July is the race's fortnight and August's eighteen days back to back, and the CNE article picks up where the race leaves off. The Harbourfront guide covers the waterfront's summer festivals that the race's weekend shares.

FAQ

Questions we are asked

Where do spectators get dropped for the Honda Indy?

King and Strachan for the east gates and the start-finish grandstands (Strachan is closed south of King on race days — a ten-minute walk through the Princes' Gates), or Dufferin and Springhurst for the west gates and the Lake Shore turns (five minutes).

Can a car drive to the hospitality suites?

With a credential — the race's designated route (from Dufferin via the grounds' north roads, or from Strachan by the marshals) to the drop the credential names; a sponsor's transport manager sends dispatch the credentials and the drop a week ahead.

How long is the closure?

The grounds' roads and Lake Shore's Exhibition stretch close for about two weeks — ten days of build before the race and five of teardown after — with Strachan south of King and the Gardiner's Strachan exit closed on the three race days.

Is Friday really free?

Yes — Fan Friday's practice sessions and the paddock walk are free admission, the grounds' largest weekday crowd, and a family's day with a racetrack; bring ear protection, the cars are 130 decibels at the fence.

When is the Sunday pickup?

After the podium at about 3:30 — the crowd leaves in one wave, so the pickup is at a named corner (King and Strachan, Dufferin and Springhurst) from 4, agreed before the day, with the chauffeur waiting from the hour.
