The comparison, in one paragraph
Uber Black dispatches a late-model black sedan or SUV driven by a contractor who meets the platform's vehicle and rating standards, at a fare quoted when you request and subject to surge pricing, picked up at Pearson's rideshare zone, with no child seats, no flight tracking and no booking of a specific driver. A black car service assigns a vetted, licensed chauffeur the evening before, at a fixed fare quoted at booking with no surge, picked up at Door A's pre-arranged zone with flight tracking and a 60-minute included wait after an international arrival, with child seats installed, meet and greet available, a corporate account and statement, and a chauffeur who can be requested by name. For a spontaneous downtown trip at a quiet hour, Uber Black is fine. For the airport, the early morning, the family, the group, the account and any hour the apps surge, the black car is the product built for it.
Uber Black launched in Toronto as the premium tier — a black sedan or SUV, a driver in a collared shirt, a higher fare — and it is a reasonable product for what it is: a nicer rideshare, requested on the spot, in the vehicle a black car service would send. The comparison is worth making honestly because the vehicle is often the same and the passenger wonders what else could differ. The answer is everything around the vehicle: who is driving and how they were chosen, how the fare is set and when, where the car meets you at the airport and what it knows about your flight, what is in the car for your children, whether it exists at 4 a.m. on Boxing Day at the price you expected, how the company pays for it, and what happens when something goes wrong. This article takes each in turn, gives the cases where Uber Black is the right call and the cases where it is not, and lets the reader decide.

The vehicles: similar
Uber Black's vehicle requirements — a black luxury sedan or SUV of a recent model year with a black exterior and leather interior — produce Escalades, Navigators, S-Classes, 7 Series and Lincolns that are, on the outside, our fleet; the fleet page shows ours and the what makes a car a black car article explains the class. The differences are in the ownership and the care: our vehicles are the company's, cleaned between trips to the standard the vehicle cleaning article describes, inspected and maintained on a schedule, on winter tires from November to April by policy; an Uber Black vehicle is the driver's, cleaned and maintained as the driver chooses within the platform's rating pressure. Most are well kept; some are not; the passenger finds out at the curb.
The drivers: a vetted chauffeur versus a rated contractor
An Uber Black driver holds a City of Toronto private transportation company driver's licence, has passed the platform's background check, drives their own vehicle, and is kept on the tier by a rating; the platform has never met them. Our chauffeur holds a City of Toronto vehicle-for-hire driver's licence and a GTAA airport permit, has passed our background check, driving-record review, interview and training (the how chauffeurs are vetted article), is known to dispatch by name and record, is in a suit, and can be requested by a passenger who liked them; the chauffeur vs driver article is about exactly this gap. The rating system produces polite drivers; the vetting produces chauffeurs, and the difference shows at 4 a.m. with a family's luggage.
The fare: fixed in advance versus quoted at request
Uber Black's fare is quoted when you request the car and reflects the moment's demand; at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday it is close to our sedan's fixed fare for the same trip, at 6 p.m. on a Friday it is well above, at 1 a.m. after the last UP Express it can be double, and on New Year's Eve it is whatever the surge says. Our fare is fixed by distance and vehicle class when you book — a week ahead or an hour ahead — and is the same number at every hour, as the flat rate article explains; the how much does a black car cost article has the ranges. A passenger who books the black car pays the same as Uber Black's quiet-hour price and never the surge.
The airport: Door A versus the rideshare zone
At Pearson, Uber Black picks up at the designated rideshare zone — a walk from the arrivals doors, with the driver dispatched when you request on landing and arriving from wherever they were, five to twenty minutes later. Our chauffeur is at Door A's pre-arranged zone on your text, having tracked the flight to touchdown and waited in the cell lot; the arrivals doors article covers the zone and the flight delays article the tracking and the 60-minute included wait. A passenger whose flight lands two hours late has a black car that moved with it and an Uber Black they request when they land at whatever the hour's price is.

Flight tracking, meet and greet and the booking
Uber Black has no booking in the black car sense — a scheduled ride is a request queued for a time, filled by whichever driver accepts it, with no guarantee — and no flight tracking, no meet and greet and no name board. Ours has all three: the chauffeur assigned the evening before with a name and a plate on your confirmation, the flight tracked, and meet and greet as an add-on that puts the chauffeur inside the hall. The how early to book article explains why a booking that is a commitment matters on the days the fleet is full.
Child seats
Uber Black has none; a driver may decline a family with a toddler or take them unrestrained, which Ontario's law forbids in a hired vehicle and which is the least safe thing a two-year-old can do in a car. Ours are installed before pickup at no charge when the booking gives the ages, as the child seats article explains. For a family, this is the whole comparison.
Luggage, groups and the vehicle you actually get
An Uber Black SUV takes a family of four with luggage; a group of six with luggage is two cars requested separately. Ours has the Sprinter for six to fourteen and the group transfers article's procedure; and the class you book is the class that comes (or a higher one at no charge), whereas Uber Black's "SUV" request is filled by whichever black SUV is nearest.
Reliability at the edges
At 4 a.m., Uber Black's availability depends on which drivers chose to be online; the surge reflects how few did. On New Year's Eve, the December 20 exodus, a snowstorm and the afternoon TIFF lands, the same. Our chauffeur was assigned the evening before and is in the driveway at 3:55, as the red-eye article describes; on a storm day the winter storm plan applies. Reliability is what a booking buys, and it is the thing the apps cannot sell.
Corporate billing and the receipt
Uber for Business exists and produces monthly statements; Uber Black's receipts are emails with the fare and the HST. Our corporate account produces the statement the corporate account billing article describes — traveller, cost centre, 407, waiting, gratuity, HST as a column — and the duty of care article explains why a travel manager wants the vetting on file for the drivers who carry the company's people; an Uber Black driver's identity is known after the fact from the receipt.
Discretion and the record
An Uber Black trip is a record on a platform — the route, the addresses, the time — that the passenger, the driver and the company all hold; a black car trip is a record in our dispatch and nowhere else, and the privacy and discretion article describes what a chauffeur does with what they see and hear: nothing. For executives in a deal, talent, officials and anyone who does not want a route on a server, the difference matters.
When Uber Black is the right call
A spontaneous trip downtown at a quiet hour — a dinner decided at 7, a meeting that ends early — with no luggage, no children and no need for a specific driver: Uber Black is a good black sedan at a fair price, requested in a minute, and we say so. A passenger who does not know when they will be ready — a hospital visit of uncertain length, a party that may run late — and does not want to pay for waiting: Uber Black's on-demand model fits. A city where we do not operate: Uber Black is there.
When the black car is the right call
The airport, in either direction. Any pickup before 7 a.m. or after 10 p.m. A family with children. A group of six or more. Luggage beyond a carry-on. A corporate account, a client pickup or anything that needs a receipt with a cost centre. A day of meetings (hourly). A wedding, a prom, a wine tour. New Year's Eve, December 20, March break's Friday, a snowstorm. A passenger who wants the same chauffeur next time. Anyone who wants to know the fare before the trip and to know it will not change.

Booking the black car
The engine gives the fixed fare for any trip before you commit; the Pearson page has the airport's procedure and the UP Express comparison sets all four options side by side.
The rating system, and what it does and does not do
Uber Black's drivers are kept on the tier by passenger ratings, and the system produces a real standard of politeness and cleanliness — a driver who falls below the threshold is removed. What it cannot produce is the things a passenger cannot rate: the driver's driving record before the platform, the insurance behind the car, the vehicle's maintenance history, the training in what to do when a passenger is ill or a child seat is needed. Vetting produces those, and the passenger safety article explains what a passenger is entitled to expect from a chauffeur before the trip begins rather than a rating after it ends.
Booking notes for choosing between them
Two small things. If the trip is to or from an airport, before 7 a.m. or after 10 p.m., with children or luggage, or on an account, book the black car and know the fare. If it is a spontaneous downtown hop at a quiet hour with none of those, open the app and pay the fair price it quotes.
A worked comparison: two Friday evenings
Friday, 6 p.m., a couple from a King West condominium to a Yorkville dinner and home at 10:30. Uber Black: a request at 6 filled in eight minutes at a Friday-evening surge; a request at 10:30 filled in fifteen minutes at a higher one; two fares, two drivers, a wait on Yorkville Avenue in the rain. The black car: an hourly booking at the Friday-evening three-hour minimum, one chauffeur assigned Thursday, the car outside the restaurant when they finished, one fare quoted on Thursday. The black car cost about what the two surged Uber Black fares did and the couple did not stand in the rain; on a Tuesday at the same hours the arithmetic favours Uber Black by a margin and we would say so.
