Pearson to Mississauga: the shortest airport transfer in the GTA

Pearson is inside Mississauga, and the run from Door A to Square One is the shortest airport transfer in the region — short enough that the route decision is about which side of the airport you leave from. Here is Mississauga from the airport, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

The airport's own city

Pearson sits within Mississauga's boundaries, which puts every part of the city within 5 to 30 minutes of the terminals: the airport corporate corridor (the hotels and offices along Dixon Road, Airport Road, Carlingview and the 427) in 5 to 10; Square One and the City Centre in 12 to 20 via the 401 and Hurontario or the 403; Cooksville and Mississauga Valleys 12 to 18; Streetsville, Erin Mills and Meadowvale 12 to 25 via the 401 and the 403 or Mississauga Road; Port Credit, Lakeview and Clarkson 20 to 30 via the 427 and QEW; Malton 5 to 10. The peaks add 10 to 20 minutes, not the hour they add downtown. Pickup is at Door A; the fare is fixed by address.

Mississauga is Canada's seventh-largest city and it wraps around Pearson on three sides, which makes the airport-to-Mississauga transfer a different kind of trip from the airport-to-Toronto one: shorter, less exposed to the Gardiner and the 401's worst, and more about local knowledge — which exit, which arterial, which tower entrance at Square One, which side of Hurontario the LRT construction has closed this month. Our Mississauga work is the busiest outside downtown Toronto (the Mississauga city guide covers the city's whole black car market), and this article is the airport slice of it: the routes out of Pearson to each part of the city, the timing by hour, the corporate corridor's five-minute runs, Square One's towers and the LRT, the lakeshore villages, the banquet halls and the International Centre, and the return to the airport from each.

Leaving the airport: the four roads

Pearson's terminals connect to four highways, and Mississauga is reached by all of them. The 401 (from the airport's northern access at Airport Road or via the 427 north) runs west across the city's middle to Hurontario (for Square One), Mavis, Erin Mills Parkway and Mississauga Road (for Erin Mills, Streetsville and Meadowvale). The 427 south connects to the QEW west for the lakeshore — Dixie, Cawthra, Hurontario for Port Credit, Erin Mills for Clarkson. The 409 and the 427 north connect to the 401 and, via the 427's northern end, to the 407 for the city's north (Meadowvale, Churchill Meadows) and for Brampton. The 403 — from the 401 at the Hurontario/Eglinton interchange — runs south-west through the City Centre's edge to Erin Mills and the QEW. The chauffeur's choice is made from the destination and the live traffic; the Mississauga city guide has the highways in detail.

The airport corporate corridor: five minutes to the door

The hotels and offices along Dixon Road, Airport Road, Carlingview Drive, Silver Dart Drive and the 427 frontage — the Marriott, Hilton, Delta, Westin, Sheraton Four Points, the DoubleTree, the Holiday Inn and a dozen others; the head offices of the airport-corridor companies; the Pearson Convention Centre on Dixie — are 5 to 10 minutes from Door A and generate the shortest bookings we make: a connecting passenger with an overnight, a crew, a conference delegate, an executive at a corridor head office. The airport strip guide covers the hotels and the connecting flights article the overnight; the fare is the minimum airport transfer, and it exists because the alternative is a shuttle on a twenty-minute schedule.

Square One and the City Centre

Square One — Ontario's largest mall — and the City Centre's towers around it (the Absolute towers, the Marilyn Monroe towers, the Mississauga Civic Centre, the Living Arts Centre, Sheridan College's Hazel McCallion campus, Celebration Square) are 12 to 20 minutes from Pearson via the 401 west and Hurontario south, or the 401 and the 403 to Rathburn; at the peaks 20 to 30. The mall's entrances (the north entrance off Rathburn, the south off Burnhamthorpe, the east off Hurontario) and the towers' porte-cochères on the side streets (Duke of York, Living Arts Drive, Confederation Parkway) are on the chauffeur's map, and the Hurontario LRT's construction — below — changes the approaches month by month.

The Hurontario LRT and Mississauga's moving curbs

The Hazel McCallion Line, the light rail under construction along Hurontario Street from Port Credit to Brampton with stations at the City Centre, Cooksville and Port Credit, has closed lanes and turns along the city's main north-south street for years, and its final stretches keep doing so; dispatch reads Metrolinx's notices and the chauffeur's route into the City Centre from the 401 uses Mavis or Confederation Parkway when Hurontario's construction is in the way. The construction season article explains how the routing adapts; the Mississauga city guide has the LRT's stations.

Streetsville, Erin Mills and Meadowvale

The city's west — Streetsville's village on Queen Street with the Credit River beside it, Erin Mills' subdivisions and the Credit Valley Hospital, Meadowvale's business parks and the Meadowvale Town Centre, Churchill Meadows and Lisgar — is 12 to 25 minutes from Pearson via the 401 west to Mississauga Road, Erin Mills Parkway or Winston Churchill, or via the 407 for the north-west; the Credit Valley Hospital's entrance loop, the University of Toronto Mississauga's campus on Mississauga Road and the Streetsville GO station are on the chauffeur's map. At the peaks the 401 westbound adds ten minutes; the Mississauga city guide covers the neighbourhoods.

Port Credit, Lakeview and Clarkson

The lakeshore — Port Credit's village at the Credit River's mouth with its lighthouse, marina and Lakeshore Road patios; Lakeview's new waterfront to the east; Clarkson and Lorne Park's estates to the west — is 20 to 30 minutes from Pearson via the 427 south and the QEW west (Hurontario or Cawthra for Port Credit, Erin Mills or Southdown for Clarkson), and 30 to 40 at the peaks, when the QEW and the 427's merge are heavy in both directions. Port Credit's summer festivals close Lakeshore Road for weekends and the Mississauga city guide's calendar has the dates.

Malton, the airport's neighbour

Malton — the neighbourhood immediately east of the airport around Derry Road and Airport Road, with its Gurdwara, its Sri Guru Singh Sabha, the Malton Community Centre and the streets that predate the airport — is 5 to 10 minutes from Door A and is the shortest residential airport run in the GTA; its households fly to India and the Caribbean on the early departures, and the Brampton guide next door describes the same pattern with Punjabi-speaking chauffeurs.

The banquet halls and the International Centre

Mississauga's banquet halls on Dixie, Derry, Matheson and the 401 corridor host the region's South Asian and Italian weddings, and the airport's wedding guests — relatives arriving from Delhi, Lahore, Nairobi and London — are met at Door A with meet and greet and delivered to the hall or the hotel block; the South Asian weddings article covers the fleet plan. The International Centre on Airport Road — the region's largest trade show venue after the convention centre — is 5 minutes from the terminals, and the International Centre article covers the show-week pattern.

The return: Mississauga to Pearson

The reverse runs are as short — Square One to Terminal 1 at 6 a.m. is twelve minutes, at 8 a.m. twenty-five; Port Credit at 4 a.m. is eighteen — and the red-eye article notes that Mississauga's early departures are the fleet's easiest. The airline's recommended arrival time is the constraint, not the road; the Pearson page has the departures procedure.

A worked example: Emirates from Dubai to Erin Mills

Emirates lands at Terminal 1 at 16:05 — the afternoon bank. A family of four with meet and greet is met at the international exit at 16:40 and through at 17:05 (an hour; the bank is heavy). Door A at 17:10. The 401 westbound is red at the 427 but the chauffeur is on it for only five kilometres; Erin Mills Parkway at 17:32, the driveway at 17:38. Twenty-eight minutes in the peak. The same family bound for Yorkville would have been in the car for an hour and a quarter.

Booking the Mississauga run

The engine prices any Mississauga address from either terminal and the fare is the shortest airport transfer in the region; the Mississauga city guide covers the city's whole black car market. Give the tower or the hall's entrance in the notes.

The corporate corridor's accounts and the five-minute economics

A five-minute run has a minimum fare, and the airport corridor's companies and hotels book hundreds of them a month on corporate accounts — a crew of six from the Sheraton Gateway to a Dixon Road hotel, a consultant from the Marriott to a corridor head office, a delegate from the Pearson Convention Centre to Terminal 3 — and the account's monthly statement lists each at the minimum with its HST; the corporate account billing article explains the reconciliation and the employee shuttle vs black car article works the arithmetic for companies that move staff between the corridor's offices and the terminals daily.

The University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan

UTM's campus on Mississauga Road in Erin Mills and Sheridan's Hazel McCallion campus at Square One bring international students through Pearson in September and January — a parent in Lagos or Shanghai booking a Pearson pickup with meet and greet and a chauffeur who speaks the family's language, the residence's loop on the chauffeur's map, a text at each step — and the unaccompanied minors guide and the convocation article cover the arrangements at both ends of the academic year.

The 407 from Pearson to Mississauga's north

For the city's north-west — Meadowvale's business parks, Churchill Meadows, Lisgar, the 407 corridor's offices — the 427 north to the 407 west is the peak-hour alternative to the 401, five to ten minutes faster when the 401 is red and a short toll the 407 article explains; the chauffeur offers it as a line item and uses it only when it helps. For everywhere else in Mississauga the 401, 403 and QEW are enough.

Booking notes for Mississauga

Three small things. Give the terminal — a car at Terminal 1 for a WestJet passenger is a Terminal Link ride wasted, even on a fifteen-minute run. Name the tower or the hall's entrance; Square One's four entrances are a kilometre apart. And for the corridor's hotels, give the hotel's full name — there are two Marriotts and two Sheratons within five minutes of Door A.

The Credit Valley Hospital, Trillium and the medical run

Mississauga's hospitals — Credit Valley on Eglinton at Erin Mills, Trillium Health Partners' Mississauga Hospital on the Queensway at Cooksville — bring patients' families and visiting physicians through Pearson, and the run from Door A to either is fifteen to twenty minutes; the healthcare executive transport article covers the visiting-physician pattern and the medical appointments article the standing orders that the city's older residents set up for the weekly trip. A relative arriving from abroad to visit a patient is met with meet and greet and taken directly to the hospital's entrance loop, which is on the chauffeur's map.

A second worked example: the 4 a.m. Port Credit departure

Air Transat to Punta Cana leaves Terminal 3 at 06:15. A couple in a Port Credit condominium has a 03:40 pickup; the chauffeur texts from the tower's porte-cochère at 03:38, loads two bags, and takes Lakeshore to Hurontario, the QEW east and the 427 north to Terminal 3's departures curb at 03:58. Twenty minutes, on roads that will take forty at 8 a.m. The couple is through security by 04:30 and the return in a week, landing at 23:20, is met at Door A and home by midnight.
